Welcome to another Lesson in Carla Sonheim's Drawing Lab.
This time, she asks us to do some monkeying around using a limited palette of just 4 different supplies. And then, as you probably already guessed, draw a monkey.
I thought that I would really challenge myself by not even choosing the colors used. I asked Maggie to choose them for me.
I had her pick one Prismacolor pencil, one chalk pastel and one fine tipped colored Sharpie to pair with my trusty black Sharpie pen. Here are her first choices.
Here's my little monkey in red colored pencil, hot pink ink, mustard brown pastel and black Sharpie.
I really had no idea I would enjoy drawing monkeys so much. I've never really been partial to them. But, I decided I wanted to do another one just because....and Maggie was excited to pick out a new combination of colors!
This time she chose orange prismacolor, tan ink, and periwinkle blue pastel.
I was shocked at how cool this looks! Totally something I would never choose to do on my own....monkeys just are not blue....haha!
Carla suggests making envelopes with 4 random art implements inside....and when you want a challenge or need some new inspiration....you pick one, open it up and use just those 4 supplies on your next project. A neat idea, for sure :)
We have one more Lesson to complete before moving from animals to people....should be interesting!
Thanks for joining me....and feel free to link up your monkey business here, too!
Hugs,
Cameron

Oh your monkeys look fantastic! And I'll for sure try your colour challenge. Thanks for the idea.
Wow! Those monkeys are fantastic! And what a fine little helper you have. She chose fabulous colors. :)
Now how fun are these!! See what happens when you experiment with color--magic (Maggie's a great assistant)! And love those monkees too!
LOVE that blue monkey......so cool!!
I have a random suggestions basket on my art table for when I 'get stuck' or 'bored' with what I'm doing, it's helped me a lot ;o)
I like them both but the blue monkey is so much fun! Good idea to have someone else choose the colors!
THey look freaking amazing. I adore this blue monkey face! Very impressed!
Well Cam, your little monkey faces turned out wonderfully well, the second especially looks so thoughtful.
:-)
The monkeys are wonderful! I say if you want a challenge just have Maggie pick out the items and you can create! Children are so free - they don't think about the rules!
Ok.. it's official - you are amazing! Who would have guessed that monkeys can look this good! I love how you turned it into a game with your daughter. The results are unbelievable!
Your monkeys totally blew mine away! But i wasn't into drawing monkeys before either and now i want to do more because it was fun, and the choosing colors first really worked well too and i didn't expect it to.
I LOVE your monkeys! THe colour combinations are great too! Sometimes when I am uninspired I will close my eyes and pick my colours...it is always fun!
Oh what fantastic monkeys..who'd have thought the world was missing blue monkeys..but it is!:) Gorgeous work x
Looks great! :)
Wow Cameron, I am impressed! You did a great job on them. I think it's awesome you had Maggie pick your colors. Those are neat looking sharpies, don't think I've seen them in the art store I go to, only the black, and a couple of boring colors. I already did some damage going to the art store yesterday, so I need to control myself whenever I see art supplies, lol!
I fell so behind on this book, I really wanted to join in and I did good till I got to the zoo part. Well, there is no zoo anywhere near me, so I didn't bother...guess I could have youtubed something. I will get back to it though, as I loved the first lessons.
have a great day
betty
wow these are amazing!!! The blue monkey rock the house ;) Love love love the colors your little princess choose ♥♥♥ can´t wait to try my own!! PS your new background and header are real cool!!
every week, when I buy my big bananashrub (at least 20 pieces) the saleswoman secretly think I am a monkey in a humancostume ;)
These monkeys are so cool! I love the different colors, and how you make them work and look so incredible despite the fact that typical monkeys aren't blue HAHA! Maggie makes great color choices ;) Actually Cam, you've got sort of an odd knack for drawing monkeys so it seems. Perhaps you should continue this theme HAHA!
I am totally blown away by this! And your blue monkey is brilliant! I absolutely love it and think that they both could be great in a kids room or nursery. I just love what you've done!
AND thank you for your comment over the weekend - yes, the art show was great and if you ever come this way, please let me know. We can do coffee and have the girls meet if you want! xo
This is such a cool idea, and I just love both of your monkeys!! That blue one really pops :) What a fun project. And go Maggie, great job picking out the colors! ~Lauren
Looooove the monkey, that reminds me....I have some pastel drawings of African Wildlife I made for my sister years ago, should look them up and post them,...... ♥♥♥ your ABC stuff !
These are wonderful Cameron ~ your talent is so inspiring!

Those monkeys are SOOOO darn cute! Your sweetie picked out some great color combos. They worked so well, and the monkeys are adorable!!!! :)
Aww...your little one has such a great eye for colour...and these have to be the sweetest and beautifully drawn monkeys I've ever seen. I like monkeys a little bit...but only from a distance. I have a friend how's from Malasia and I've heard some scary stories about the monky's there. ^_^
Wow Cameron they are both fantastic! The blue one is so orginal your daughter knows what to do lol.

I love the way your monkeys turned out. The idea of letting your daughter choose the colors is perfect.
O.K. Cam, I have to admit that I don't like monkeys. That being said, your blue chimp is fantastic!!! They are both great but the blue one is my fav. Don't think I could hang with this challenge, lol!
