Monkey Business - Lesson 7

Welcome to another Lesson in Carla Sonheim's Drawing Lab.

This time, she asks us to do some monkeying around using a limited palette of just 4 different supplies.  And then, as you probably already guessed, draw a monkey.

I thought that I would really challenge myself by not even choosing the colors used.  I asked Maggie to choose them for me.
I had her pick one Prismacolor pencil, one chalk pastel and one fine tipped colored Sharpie to pair with my trusty black Sharpie pen.  Here are her first choices.

Here's my little monkey in red colored pencil, hot pink ink, mustard brown pastel and black Sharpie.

I really had no idea I would enjoy drawing monkeys so much.  I've never really been partial to them.  But, I decided I wanted to do another one just because....and Maggie was excited to pick out a new combination of colors!

This time she chose orange prismacolor, tan ink, and periwinkle blue pastel.

I was shocked at how cool this looks!  Totally something I would never choose to do on my own....monkeys just are not blue....haha!

Carla suggests making envelopes with 4 random art implements inside....and when you want a challenge or need some new inspiration....you pick one, open it up and use just those 4 supplies on your next project.  A neat idea, for sure :)

We have one more Lesson to complete before moving from animals to people....should be interesting!
Thanks for joining me....and feel free to link up your monkey business here, too!

Anyone else have a craving for a banana? :)
Hugs,
Cameron

LOVE that blue monkey......so cool!!

I have a random suggestions basket on my art table for when I 'get stuck' or 'bored' with what I'm doing, it's helped me a lot ;o)

I like them both but the blue monkey is so much fun! Good idea to have someone else choose the colors!

The monkeys are wonderful! I say if you want a challenge just have Maggie pick out the items and you can create! Children are so free - they don't think about the rules!

Your monkeys totally blew mine away! But i wasn't into drawing monkeys before either and now i want to do more because it was fun, and the choosing colors first really worked well too and i didn't expect it to.

Wow Cameron, I am impressed! You did a great job on them. I think it's awesome you had Maggie pick your colors. Those are neat looking sharpies, don't think I've seen them in the art store I go to, only the black, and a couple of boring colors. I already did some damage going to the art store yesterday, so I need to control myself whenever I see art supplies, lol!
I fell so behind on this book, I really wanted to join in and I did good till I got to the zoo part. Well, there is no zoo anywhere near me, so I didn't bother...guess I could have youtubed something. I will get back to it though, as I loved the first lessons.

have a great day

every week, when I buy my big bananashrub (at least 20 pieces) the saleswoman secretly think I am a monkey in a humancostume ;)

These monkeys are so cool! I love the different colors, and how you make them work and look so incredible despite the fact that typical monkeys aren't blue HAHA! Maggie makes great color choices ;) Actually Cam, you've got sort of an odd knack for drawing monkeys so it seems. Perhaps you should continue this theme HAHA!

I am totally blown away by this! And your blue monkey is brilliant! I absolutely love it and think that they both could be great in a kids room or nursery. I just love what you've done!
AND thank you for your comment over the weekend - yes, the art show was great and if you ever come this way, please let me know. We can do coffee and have the girls meet if you want! xo

Aww...your little one has such a great eye for colour...and these have to be the sweetest and beautifully drawn monkeys I've ever seen. I like monkeys a little bit...but only from a distance. I have a friend how's from Malasia and I've heard some scary stories about the monky's there. ^_^
