Fitting Halloween in a Box

Or at least on one!...haha....

I told you more little painted boxes were in my future!

I think they're a really fun way to add a bit more Halloween Whimsy to my house without destroying my budget :-P

I've been wanting to experiment with crackle glaze for a while now....

So, I thought these would be a safe, small project to experiment on...
I like the added texture and "finished" appearance it gives!

I learned, though, the thicker you apply, the larger the cracks....next time I won't be so careful, and I'll really slather it on :)

This one I made for a "Nightmare" lovin Friend!
I wanted to paint Zero inside, but the sides of the box were a little too deep to have good control over the brush/pen....so, a Halloweeny wrapped gift seemed appropriate :)

I used some irridescent glitter over the ribbon inside, and Jack's bowtie outside...
I think you can just barely see some of the flecks in this picture :)

My only complaint with these boxes is sealing them.  Does anyone have a suggestion on what to put on them that doesn't make the lids stick?  I've tried the crackle glaze and Mod-Podge with both having that kinda tacky feel....I have to pry the lids off sometimes...and the paper tears a bit :(

It's cold and rainy here today...and I'm loving it!! Hope you are all having a wonderful day, too :)

Big Hugs,
Cameron

I am loving those boxes, I love playing with crackle glaze too :) Is it one step crackle you are using? if it is have you tried drying thick crackle with a hairdryer? it makes the cracks deeper and also if you use crackle over a painting done with molding paste and use a hairdryer the cracks are super deep and awesome :)

I have no advise on the sticky problem though? other than trying a matte spray varnish? but then all your glossyness would be gone? hmmm I hope someone else has the answers for you.

Cameron,
Love the boxes...It's funny you say that about the crackle etc... because I have done several "boxes" for my etsy site and now they are just sitting here because the lids stick. I hope someone has the answer. Keep up the creativity!! I am coming out of a creative "funk" , so my long nights are back again. Can't get much done during the day with all these lil' churn around if ya know what I mean....

Your boxes are fabulous!! I really love the Jack Skellington one, very fun! :) I have been meaning to try crackle medium for a while, and boxes seem like a good place to start. I tried one once which didn't work at all, so I need to try a new one. Unfortunately the only way I have found for my box lids to not stick is using matte spray varnish, which can be quite awkward. Brush-on varnish didn't work. Maybe someone else will have a different solution. I hope you have enjoyed your lovely chilly day! :) ~Lauren

Lovely boxes! Your crackle paint turned out great--much better than I've gotten the stuff to behave. You have an amazing amount of creative energy, may it flow on!

These are so much fun!!

I do NOT like the sticky problem of which you speak; the only thing I've ever done that works is to NOT put the Mod Podge (or whatever it is you happen to be using) in the stick prone spots.

It doesn't look as awesome when the box is open, but at least the lid doesn't stick.

Sorry, that's all I have, and it's not much!!

Great boxes, although my favorite is the skeleton! So fun!

I've been spraying my altered book pages with a clear acyrlic sealer (matte finish) which cut down on the sticky factor of the Mod Podge. Just a light coat worked. It does cut down also on glitter effect and shine though. so you may want to try a more shiny finish for things with gloss or glitter effect.

Thanks for the nice comment about my Bee & hive Collage, Yes those are words trailing behind and yes I love the bee too, I paint so my first thought when I saw that bee was to paint one just like it on to my board but instead I just got my mod podge out!!! If you want a bee of your very own go the Graphics Fairy, I got the bee and the hive there.
Thanks again-

those are a great idea! love the one you did for your friend - one day I will actually watch the movie (which has been in my collection for ages, lol!)
have you found a crackle that you like? I've used Delta and was not impressed, but maybe I didn't use enough.
As to sealing the boxes, did you try the spray sealers? Mod podge would indeed be too sticky.
