LESSON 9 - When Right is Wrong

Hello Friends!
As promised, I finally have another installment of Carla Sonheim's Drawing Lab Lessons to share with you.

This lesson was about using your wrong hand to draw a portrait with permanent ink.
No erasing, limited control and looking at your subject 60% of the time while drawing, is meant to practice further coordination between your hand and your eyes.

For me, my right hand is my "wrong" hand....
So, I used 2 tear outs from a magazine, a Sharpie and began.
Here's the first attempt.

Fine motor control with this hand is greatly reduced, so detail lines were quite difficult.  Eyes were automatically wonky and trying to control the slope of her jaw...well, had some humorous results :)

I chose a larger picture for the 2nd one which proved to be a tad easier...

But not much...haha!  What would usually be a deliberate slight curve with your dominant hand becomes way too wavy like in the lips and eyes....

...and those fine lines of the eyelashes and hair take a lot of thought with your wrong hand.  It was kind of nice not to worry about the outcome, though.  I'm finding that this book is helping me to relinquish the choke hold I sometimes assert on my art....haha!

Next week's Lesson...we get to go to the Coffee Shop and draw the people around us.  I get a little self conscious when I whip out a pencil and paper in public...but I'll do it for you guys, oh, and the promise of coffee doesn't hurt either ;P

Please link up your wrong-handed drawings here!
Thanks for playing along :)

Blowing kisses with both hands,
Cameron

You drew these with your wrong hand...? WHAT THE HECK!!! They're still incredible. I can't even write my name with my left hand. This is just ridiculous :)

I am way impressed that you drew these period. Even more impressed that you did it with your wrong hand! Whoa. I just bought a wacom tablet and I'm excited to do some computer drawing with it. I think I'll stick with my right hand, though. :)

I love that first one with her pointy chin. she's so stylized and cool. she looks wonky on purpose.

This looks like fun! Looking forward to trying it! Not sure about drawing people in the coffee shop, since I never GO to coffee shops! :D

I really enjoy your Carla Sonheim practices! Years ago I was in her workshop (my first workshop ever) and she made us do the same thing - except that we were supposed to draw the person sitting next to us. I wanted to run away.... specially because the lady sitting beside me seemed very serious. Needless to say, my drawings were nowhere near cool as yours... Great job!

This would be my attempt with my dominant hand--especially with a pen--I am so impressed!!!

I CAN NOT believe that you used your "wrong" hand to do that! Wow, I think mine would end up looking like a hot mess! I am so impressed!!! xoxo

Quite impressive, especially with the wrong hand. If I did that, you probably wouldn't be able to tell what it is. Ha!!! I may have to give it a try, just to challenge myself.
Like you, I have a harder time drawing in public. I don't know why, I guess it's because I'm not in my comfort zone and don't want anyone looking over my shoulder. Also, it's easier to get distracted. I'm sure you can do it though. I am excited to see your coffee shop drawings. yay!! :)
Hope all is well and you are having joy filled days!

I was sure I commented days ago. Damn! :) I'm thinking your ambidextrous. Yeah, I had to google that word. :)) Cause no way something slightly resembling a face would come out of my left hand. :) Oh, I get to link next week. :) I'll be cheating though. Do you mind?

You are too hard on yourself, these are quite loose and lovely! I'll try to link up soon! Mine will not be good as i have no coordination in my left hand!

I did it ! I actually did it a while ago (the sketch) and then by chance this week (the paint one) It's FUN, it's HARD, it's also a little addictive I find.....my wrong hand is my left hand, but I would like to practise more, so that it doesn't feel so wrong anymore xoxo Linked you from my post as well :)

Oh, and your attempts look pretty good miss-paint-yourself-oh-so-pretty !!!!!!!!

Wow - now that looks like a great challenge. I am VERY VERY left handed - I can barely write my name with my right hand. I may just try this sometime. Thanks for sharing your experiments - they look really good. :)

Whew! I did it! It was very interesting to see what my left hand would do when I told it to! ;) I may have insulted Angelina Jolie, but I did my best, lol! Thanks for an interesting lesson, Cameron!

wow Cameron can´t believe you draw them with your left hand! love the second one and the only "wonkyness" I find is in the tip of her nose ;)...well done !!
