Lesson 8 - Unimaginative Creatures

Actually, this Lesson is called Imaginary Creatures.....but, I had a hard time enjoying this one...

Hi there!  Yes, yes, it's really me.  I have re-surfaced, just briefly, mind you....to bring you another Lesson from this wonderful book:

My Husband is a teacher...so both he and and my daughter are home for Spring Break.  I haven't been on the computer or at my art desk much, but was able to squeeze this in.
The results of this Lesson do not compare in the least to what I accomplished in the last... but I am the first to admit that I just don't pull off whimsy easily.

We were to put random watercolor marks on paper starting with red.

Then blue...
Then yellow...

After we let these marks dry, we were to try to pull an imaginary creature from the shapes....outlining in ink and adding more detail with charcoal and more paint.

Here's some sort of butterfly/ flying lizard thing....

A kinda mouse thing...

...and a bit of a bird-like thing...

I didn't care for this assignment....but, again, it's about doing something I wouldn't normally do and expanding my horizons :)
What I am really excited about, though, is that the completion of this Lesson moves us into the next Unit.  Lessons inspired by People now, rather than animals!

Thank you all for joining me so far...and a big welcome to the New Linkers who have found their way here!
We still have a lot of Book left to explore together :D

So, please link your Lesson 8 posts here:

...and I'll be sure to drop by!

Hope you've all been able to use your imaginations this week!
Big Hugs,
Cameron

I did this one with my kids last month--it was actually the first exercise I did from the book. So I linked up, but to my kids/art blog.

I like your creatures, especially the mouse. I think the challenge on this one is knowing that you'll be turning the watercolor blots into something else later, but keeping your brain out of trying to create a recognizable blot. You kind of have to trick yourself.

I was wondering where you were hiding...glad you came up for air and showed us some pretties...I think you do pull of whimsy. Quite well.

This is one of the exercises I do fairly often, because I always love when I have no expectations and something shows up. And not matter what you say - you pull it off perfectly! I love all your kind-a-creatures. They made me smile :-)

This looks very cool actually--just let your mind go, and that's probably the hardest part--they're so fun!

Err... one day soon I will be taking part in this.... This evening I've been building a facebook fan page.

To be fair, I have actually done this. Shall I go and find the link to when (if?) I posted about it?

I really love the bird! And your ladies with quotes on board books are whimsical so i think you do whimsy well.... But it is hard to just paint with no plan sometimes. I'll try to link up soon....

I cannot do whimsy. CANNOT. But as I now have a shiny new watercolour moleskin to play in (thanks to my sis making me sell her duplicate pressie) I shall have a play!

Like many others have said - I see a lot of whimsy in your creations :)

Am going to selfishly say I'm glad you haven't been posting loads while I've been poorly. Very considerate of you. :D :D

p.s I forgot to say - these don't look like practise pictures at all. They'd all be happily at home in a childrens story book!

Expanding our horizons and getting out of our comfort zone can be very challenging Cam, but also often very rewarding.
In your case I say it was very rewarding!
Keep shining my talented friend.

Forgive me but the butterfly lizard looks quite like a new pokemon... HAHA! Perhaps they'd hire you on as an artist?

I loved your imaginative creatures! I agree with Amy. You do have to kind of trick yourself when doing the painting so you don't TRY to paint something that looks like an animal. Mine aren't really imaginative, but I guess I had to use my imagination to find them! This was my favorite lesson so far!

Very fun - this book must really be freeing you and sparking creativity. One day maybe I'll do it too!

I so wish I could've done this with you, but I forgot to go get a book. Oh well, it is really fun to see the lessons you're doing and even though some are challenging or not as likeable, you are totally pulling them off and making it look easy. I love your imaginary animals, they're all stinkin' sweet!! Especially that cute little mouse. I'm certain he belongs in a children's book. :) Very cute! Hooray, for new adventures.
